As their first teenage birthday party, you'll probably find that they are keen to do something a bit different from previous birthdays that allows them to feel more grown up. Younger teens always want to behave more like adults, so some careful planning is necessary.

You'll want to give them the freedom to pick a party theme that lets them feel grown up, but is still something that can still be interpreted in a way that is age appropriate. For example, you might throw an America's Next Top Model theme party and let them get dressed up and have their hair and make-up done for different themed photo shoots. Or maybe a Hollywood VIP theme where they can dress up in glamorous/formal clothes and walk the red carpet.

Just make sure you talk to them in advance about the type of party decorations and activities—they might think that traditional decorations like balloons and such are too 'kidsy' for them.

For younger teenagers you should also decide whether the party is going to be co-ed or single sex and think about how you're going to supervise the party. Keep in mind that at this age they will want to feel a bit more independent and may not really want to have their parents around watching over their party. Decide whether they need to be chaperoned, or whether you can set everything up, then once the party has got started, you can take yourself off to another part of the house to let them get on with it.
