After studying Acting & Musical Theatre at London's Mountview Theatre School, Matt James stumbled into a career in event production while volunteering for AIDS charity London Lighthouse.
In 1998 he created and produced the Designs For Life fashion show which brought together one hundred of the top names in fashion, from Armani to Versace, each of whom designed a one-of-a-kind garment inspired by the AIDS red ribbon symbol. During this time Matthew sold the sponsorship of the event to Canon and the event went on to be a phenomenal success raising much-needed funds for people living with HIV and generating world-wide TV and press coverage.
Following Canon Designs For Life, Matt James went on to establish his own event production company, Left Field Productions, and has continued creating high profile fundraising events for charities and private clients.
In 1999, Matt persuaded Sir Elton John to open the grounds of his estate for a summer garden party. This event went on to become his now famous White Tie & Tiara Ball, which has raised millions of pounds for his AIDS Foundation.
Later that year, Matt approached Mattel for permission to use the Barbie brand to create a fundraising initiative to raise money for children living with HIV & AIDS. He then secured leading names from the world of contemporary art and photography to create works of art using Barbie dolls, while top fashion designers were invited to dress Barbie both in miniature and life size garments.
The Art of Barbie exhibition and fashion show was co-hosted by Victoria Beckham and Sir Elton John. Contributing artists and designers included Mario Testino, Alexander McQueen, Sam Taylor-Wood, David Bailey, Jean Paul Gaultier, Anthony Gormley, Ellen Von Unwerth, Paul Smith, Marc Quinn, Stella McCartney, Rachel Whiteread, Jimmy Choo, Prada, Alison Jackson, and Versace.
Other notable fundraising events Matt has been responsible for include: a party for Kevin Spacey to raise money for a new roof for The Old Vic Theatre, and transforming the long running British Red Cross London Ball from a traditional black-tie charity dinner in the Grosvenor House Ballroom, into a glamorous, multi-award winning, red carpet event attended by the likes of Hugh Grant, Roberto Cavalli and Girls Aloud.
Left Field Productions has been responsible for some of Europe's most glamorous events including:
Since 2004 Left Field Productions has won an unprecedented 30 industry awards for excellence including Production Company of the Year.
